U.S. Cellular Community Park Sets Economic Impact Record
A 15 percent increase in teams traveling to Medford produced a record-setting $11.85 million year in economic stimulus produced by tournaments and special events held at U.S. Cellular Community Park during 2016, according to research conducted by the Medford Parks and Recreation Department.
The stimulus from 41 events shattered the previous record of $11 million established in 2015, the fifth consecutive record-breaking year.
A total of 1,837 teams competed on the 14 synthetic-grass fields at the 132-acre park, including 890 from outside the Rogue Valley. The visiting team count rose for the sixth consecutive year.
Since its May 2008 grand opening, the facility has generated over $79.6 million in estimated local sales stemming from 36,700 games and over 1.6 million sports-related participants and spectators. The $34.7 million estimated total spending by visiting teams since 2008 now exceeds the $32.5 million in park construction costs.
Parks and Recreation staff compiled the economic impact figures using empirical data-collection and analytical methods outlined by Texas A&M professor Dr. John L. Crompton in his 1999 book, "Measuring the Economic Impact.”
