Sports Park Tourneys Boost Sluggish Economy
By Rich Rosenthal, City of Medford Recreation Supt.January 21, 2010
Events at U.S. Cellular Community Park during 2009 generated millions in economic impact for Medford and boosted the bottom line for many local businesses.
Based on survey analysis compiled by Recreation Division staff using proven economic-impact methodology of Texas A&M professor John Crompton, USCCP generated an estimated $6.5 million in sales based on 37 tournaments.
The 448 teams from outside the Rogue Valley that visited Medford spent $2.9 million, which does not factor in a "ripple effect."
For every dollar spent by tournament visitors, 65 cents of personal income is accrued income. Simply stated, USCCP theoretically generated $24.37 for each resident.
If one job is created for every $36,481 in economic impact – Medford’s median income – USCCP created 79 jobs based on the direct spending of visitors.
Since its May 2008 grand opening, the $25 million park has generated over $9.5 million in estimated local sales.
